En el diseño de los ascensores intervienen multitud de factores que se evalúan detenidamente para garantizar su uso seguro en todo momento. Entre ellos se encuentran tanto la carga máxima como la capacidad máxima que admite cada instalación y que se encuentran indicadas dentro de la cabina. Pero ¿qué determina la presencia de un valor u otro en la placa identificativa? Al contrario de lo que podría parecer, estas cifras no se limitan al modelo o al tipo de ascensor, ya que es necesario tener en cuenta una serie de factores para obtener un cálculo exacto.
Ambos valores se encuentran relacionados de tal forma que el factor limitante de uno de ellos establecerá a su vez el valor máximo del otro. Normalmente, el factor limitante suele ser el espacio disponible en cabina, por lo que los ascensores se suelen diseñar en función de la carga equivalente a la cantidad de personas que caben dentro la cabina. Esta carga equivalente se calcula sobre la base de un peso promedio de 75 kilogramos por usuario, de tal forma que si, por ejemplo, en la cabina caben 4 pasajeros, la instalación se calculará para que soporte 300 kilos más un amplio coeficiente de seguridad.
La capacidad máxima de un ascensor es el número máximo de personas que pueden entrar en la cabina. Este valor deber ser el menor de los posibles entre, por un lado, la capacidad de carga máxima dividida por 75 kilos y redondeada a la cifra entera menor y, por otro, una serie de valores establecidos por la norma armonizada UNE 81-20 y calculados para que los pasajeros puedan viajar de forma cómoda en función de la superficie útil de la cabina.
La carga máxima de un ascensor es el peso máximo que puede soportar el sistema de suspensión de la cabina y desplazar el grupo impulsor. Como se ha mencionado antes, el factor limitante suele ser la superficie útil de cabina, así que lo más habitual es calcular el sistema de suspensión y la potencia del grupo impulsor de conformidad con el número de kilogramos equivalentes a la cifra máxima de pasajeros en cada tipo de ascensor:
Todos los cálculos se realizan sobre la base de amplios coeficientes de seguridad para garantizar que, si se sobrepasa la carga máxima por el motivo que sea, los usuarios no se vean expuestos a ningún riesgo. En cualquier caso, la normativa obliga a impedir el funcionamiento de un ascensor cuando se supera el umbral de peso establecido para evitar situaciones de uso poco seguras.
Actualmente, los ascensores puestos en marcha desde abril de 2016 deben cumplir con el R.D.203/2016 por el que se traspone la Directiva Europea 2014/33/UE y sus normas armonizadas EN 81-20 y EN 81-50. Estas normas regulan las cargas máximas admisibles en función del área útil y, para evitar situaciones de uso poco seguras, obligan a la instalación de un dispositivo de seguridad o pesacargas que impida el funcionamiento del ascensor al superar en un 10 % su carga máxima indicada. Este dispositivo debe alertar del exceso de carga a los usuarios mediante una señal visual y audible.
Asimismo, estas normas exigen que las cabinas cuenten con una placa visible que muestre la carga nominal en kilogramos y la capacidad, es decir, la cantidad máxima de personas que pueden transportar (1, 2, 3, 4…). En ocasiones, estos valores también pueden aparecer indicados en la parte exterior de las puertas de rellano. Para dotar de mayor seguridad a los ascensores puestos en marcha con normas anteriores, la próxima actualización de la normativa, prevista para inicios de 2023, obligará a incorporar un dispositivo de control de carga similar al descrito en la norma armonizada UNE 81-20 en todos los ascensores existentes.
Los valores de carga se calculan en función de unos márgenes bastante amplios en términos de coeficientes de seguridad. Además, la normativa exige bloquear el funcionamiento cuando se superan los valores máximos establecidos para cada instalación. Aun así, en el caso de que fuese posible utilizar un ascensor cuando se ha superado el límite de peso máximo, es conveniente conocer las posibles consecuencias para evitar esta mala práctica:
